The conversation around blind hiring is heating up in the HR world as more and more people are becoming aware of the effects that unconscious bias can have on the hiring process. In our last blog post on the topic, we discussed how blind hiring practices could serve as a valuable tool for combating unconscious bias.
In a blog post we put out a few weeks ago, we discussed “blind hiring,” a trending new hiring practice that some employers are using to mitigate the effects of unconscious bias. Unconscious bias refers to the mental shortcuts and stereotypes we use unconsciously when judging situations and making decisions. While the concept of unconscious bias is widely accepted in psychology, many people may find it hard to believe that their everyday decisions are regularly influenced by unconscious bias.
With the recent push for companies to hire a more diverse workforce, many employers are opting to use what are known as “blind hiring” techniques. Blind hiring is a way to minimize unconscious bias in hiring decisions, making it easier for employers to evaluate a candidate’s abilities without being influenced by factors such as gender, ethnicity, age, and educational background. Blind hiring tactics can take many forms, from simply eliminating (or “blinding”) names and other identifying information on resumes, to postponing face-to-face interviews until as late in the hiring process as possible. A recent Wall Street Journal article provides some other examples of innovative ways employers are implementing “blind hiring” techniques.
